Avenged Sevenfold + Mike Portnoy

Postby Darren89762000 » Thu Feb 18, 2010 9:53 am

I dunno if anyone else heard, but apparently Mike Portnoy is stepping in for Drums on their next record. At least, DT and MP's Myspace released that info.

Thoughts?

Portnoy is one of the best, and he's doing A7X a favor. It was cool of him to do so when he's already got a ton of stuff on his plate.

Well i'm not familiar with mike, but I'm aware of the influence he's had on the Rev and how much he inspired him...Dude said some pretty nice things about the band...although I don't know what to expect from this new album,im intrigued to hear it even though I miss my Jimmy... here's what Mike had to say about the sitch:

Even under normal circumstances, I would’ve been happy to help the guys out in any way I could as I think Avenged Sevenfold are a great band…but under these incredibly sad and tragic circumstances, I must say I am truly honored to have been asked to play with them…and I didn’t even have to think twice about saying yes.

These guys are a true family and it is an incredibly emotional experience to be here with them for the first time without their lost brother. But they have welcomed me into the family with open arms and there’s a real excitement to make the record they had set out to make…

I am treating my participation on this album with the utmost respect for Jimmy’s memory and am remaining as true as possible to the drum parts that he wrote for the songs and the record he wanted to make.

I want their fans to realize that I’m not trying to step into or fill The Rev’s shoes…I’m just merely lacing em up for him!

Not really a fan of DT, but Mike is an amazing drummer and I give him props for doing this for A7X.

I'm also really happy A7X didn't just stick some random ass studio musician in there to fill in the drums and is actually having someone that Jimmy was friends with and admired...to me it says a lot about those guys.

Well sir, you'll be disappointed because, as far as I heard/know, that was a one time deal. Doesn't look like he'll be playing anything live with them, so you can expect to see either A) A full out replacement or B) A Random Ass Tour Drummer. He'd be one thing if it was his Drum Tech, but I think it'd be a shot at The Rev to get a random ass guy to fill in. As harsh as this may sound, replace him or don't play as A7X anymore if you think replacing him would be an insult.

Blah. Bad idea on both sides IMO. It'd been cool to have him do the CD and maybe a really big show, but to actually tour? Not too big on that idea honestly.

I started listening to the New CD last night, wasn't impressed with the music at all so far. Though, Portnoy does a fantastic job from what I've heard.
